Father Peter Alliata

Father Peter Alliata, a Washington, DC native, was the son of Piter Alliata and Katherine Alliata.
Father Alliata had one sister and is survived by one brother. He was baptized at Holy Rosary, the
Italian parish in Washington, and later attended St. Joseph’s Home and School and St. Martin’s
School in Washington. He then attended St. Charles College in Catonsville, MD and St. Mary’s
Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington in 1961.
He served as an associate pastor at St. Matthias Parish in Lanham, then as an associate pastor at
Assumption and St. Joseph on Capitol Hill. He later served as associate pastor at Sacred Heart
Parish in Bowie, followed by serving as associate pastor of St. Nicholas in Laurel.
In 1974 Father Alliata was named as the Pastor of Holy Angels in Avenue, MD. In 1980 he
became the founding pastor of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Waldorf. From 1987 to
2004 Father Alliata served as pastor of St. James Parish in Mount Rainier, MD. In 2004 he
returned to Southern Maryland as the pastor of Immaculate Conception in Mechanicsville, MD.
He served there until he retired in 2010.
During his time as a priest he was very involved in Worldwide Marriage Encounter and the
Cursillio Movement. He said he was inspired by the faith of the people he met in those activities.
May Father Alliata be remembered as the loving, kind, generous and witty man with a sense of
humor, that he was, and also as being a priest for the People of God.

Sofia Gomes Duarte, 94, of Riverdale Park, Maryland passed away peacefully among loved ones at her home on February 10, 2023. She was born on October 3, 1928 Azambujeira dos Carros, Portugal to José Françisco and Georgina Gomes, the youngest of three sisters. On November 6, 1949 she married her one love José João Duarte. Their daughter, and only child, was born on January 4, 1951. In July of 1966 the family moved to Paris, France to seek greater opportunities. On May 15, 1970 her grandson was born. In August 1971 she immigrated to the United States, joining her husband who had immigrated earlier to start a new job and prepare their home. Daughter and grandson soon followed. Through thrift and hard work they purchased their home in Riverdale Park in January 1977. She worked, ran the household, and helped raise her grandson. On August 9, 2006 at the age of 75, she became a citizen of her beloved United Sates, completing a true American story. Sofia was driven by her Catholic faith and her devotion to family. She loved cheering for the Washington Redskins and the Men's Portuguese National Soccer team. Their 2016 European Championship was a joyous moment! She is survived by her daughter Lisette Marr, son-in-law William H. Marr, grandson Nelson P. Marr, as well as many nephews and nieces. A viewing will be held at Gasch's Funeral Home, 4739 Baltimore Ave, Hyattsville, MD from 3 to 5 PM on Sunday, February 19, 2023. A second viewing will be at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 7501 Adelphi Rd, Hyattsville, MD at 11 AM on Monday, February 20, 2023, followed by a memorial mass at 12 PM. Internment will immediately follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 4111 Pennsylvania Ave., Hillcrest Heights, MD. A light lunch and refreshments will be served at Sofia's home starting at 3pm. Please join us. Flowers or donations to the American Cancer Society in memory of Sofia Gomes Duarte and José João Duarte are welcome.

Karl Heinz Matthes, 90, of Mt. Rainier, MD passed away peacefully
at his home on Friday Feb 3rd, 2023. He was born in Berlin, Germany on
May 4th, 1932 to Edith and Karl Matthes.
After his father died early in his life, he and his mother survived on
food rations and the generosity of the American GI’s during WWII. He
was so impressed with their kindness and stories of America that he
immigrated to the US in 1951.
He joined the Army in 1956, and shortly after, met Guadalupe
Barriga when he was stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX. They were married in
El Paso, TX in 1957 and settled in Maryland in 1958.
Shortly thereafter, he started his long career at Giant Food where
he retired in 1997. He was passionate about civic involvement, running
for congress in 1974 and was very active at St. James Church as well as
St. Jerome, DeMatha and Elizabeth Seton High Schools.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Lupe, children Maggie,
Angie, Ray and Tony, daughter in laws Deb and Kathleen, grandchildren
Colleen, Sean, Karl and Mark.
Viewing and Service will be held on Friday Feb 17 at Gasch’s
Funeral Home, 4739 Baltimore Ave Hyattsville, MD 20781. Viewing at
11am, Service at 12pm, followed immediately by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. James Catholic
Church in Mt. Rainier.

Sharon A. Cahill, 83, of Carlisle, died Saturday, January 28, 2023 at
Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home.
Born in Binghamton, New York, she was the daughter of the late
Bernard and Mary (Manganro) Cahill.
Sharon worked for the state department in Washington, D.C. for over
60 years and travelled vastly all over the world.
She was a devout Catholic, attending church at Mt. Calvary Church,
District Heights, MD.
