Lucille Vendemia

Lucille May Vendemia, age 89, of Cheverly, MD passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2021 due to congestive heart failure. She was born on July 16, 1932 in Upper Marlboro, MD. Lucille grew up in Coral Hills and was a 1950 graduate of Maryland Park High School in Capitol Heights. She married Ralph J. Vendemia, Jr. on November 1, 1953 in Washington, DC. Married for over 58 years, until he passed away in 2012, they built a life first in Ohio, moved to Kent Village in 1956 and stayed there until 1968 when they moved to Cheverly. She worked as a secretary at The Hecht Company and then Prince George’s Hospital until 1964, when she chose to become a stay at home Mom. In 1976, she became a school secretary at St. Ambrose Catholic School, retiring in 2010. She gave back to her community through joining the Sodality and Ladies of Charity at St. Ambrose and other volunteer opportunities.

Lucille is survived by her children, Martin and Luanne (Neal) Smith, grandchildren Brian and Sarah Vendemia, sister Earline “Jitter” Sharbaugh, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends. Lucille never met anyone she did not consider a friend and greeted everyone with a smile. Her capacity to love, her kindness and compassion are remembered by many. Her legacy can be found in the numerous lives she impacted.

The family will greet friends on Sunday, August 22, 2021 from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 3107 63rd Avenue, Cheverly, MD 20785, where a Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 23, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment George Washington Cemetery, 9500 Riggs Rd, Adelphi, MD 20783. A repast will be held at St. Ambrose Fannon Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Lucille’s name to St. Ambrose Ladies of Charity (address above) or St. Ann’s Center for Children, Youth and Families, 4901 Eastern Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20782.
