Soledad Dolores Claros Santizo

Soledad Dolores Claros Santizo, conocida cariñosamente por familiares y amigos como Mami Sole, nació el 18 de julio de 1940 y nos dejó pacíficamente el 20 de agosto de 2023. Fue una madre trabajadora, decidida, testaruda y amorosa que dedicó su vida a su familia. Todos los que la conocieron la extrañaran profundamente.

Soledad nació en Corinto, Morazán, El Salvador. Era la mayor de cinco hermanos y se tomaba en serio el papel de la mayor. Sus hermanos menores, Rosalina y Omar, la veían como una segunda madre que a veces podía ser seria pero siempre muy protectora con ellos. Cuando Soledad tenía 15 años fue enviada a San Miguel a vivir con su abuelo materno para que pudiera continuar su educación. Soledad pudo completar la escuela secundaria y continuó su educación para convertirse en secretaria comercial. Debido a que su madre enfermó, Soledad tuvo que suspender su educación y comenzó a trabajar para ayudar a su padre a cuidar de la familia. Aunque tuvo que hacer una pausa en su educación, nunca perdió de vista su objetivo. La educación era muy importante para Soledad y se aseguró de regresar a la escuela y obtener su título, un logro del que tanto ella como su madre estaban muy orgullosas.

En 1968, Soledad tomó la difícil y valiente decisión de dejar la comodidad de su hogar, su familia, sus amigos y todo lo que había conocido para mudarse a los Estados Unidos. Una decisión que cambió para siempre la trayectoria de su familia. Aunque no hablaba el idioma y conocía a muy poca gente, Soledad pudo encontrar trabajo rápidamente y se encargó de dominar el idioma inglés. Su excepcional ética de trabajo le permitió tener una carrera de más de 20 años en Raleigh Haberdasher hasta que cerró sus puertas en 1992.  Soledad también encontró el amor y se casó con Luis Alfredo el 28 de abril de 1971. A pesar de las numerosas dificultades, Soledad se mantuvo concentrada. Gracias a su arduo trabajo y dedicación, Soledad pudo obtener su residencia y ciudadanía estadounidense. Pudo lograr otro objetivo importante: traer a sus padres e hijos a los Estados Unidos. Soledad también hizo posible que varios miembros de su familia- hermanos, sobrinas, sobrinos e incluso amigos- se mudaran a los Estados Unidos. 

Soledad era la matriarca de la familia Claros. Era común que hermanos, hijos, nietos y sobrinos se reunieran en su casa para disfrutar del tiempo en familia. Cuando Soledad no estaba trabajando o con la familia, le encantaba cocinar, coser, hacer manualidades, trabajar en el jardín, pero sobre todo le encantaba hacer compras de segunda mano y hacer una buena venta de garaje. Era una cliente habitual del mercadillo de Magruder Park y tenía buen ojo para muchas ofertas. Si bien sus experiencias de vida crearon una capa exterior dura, quienes la conocieron y tuvieron el honor de pasar tiempo con ella apreciaron su personalidad ingeniosa, su sarcasmo y su divertido sentido del humor. 

A Soledad le precedieron en la muerte sus padres Ramiro y Juana Lucía Claros. Le sobreviven su esposo, Luis Alfredo Santizo, y sus tres hijos: César Rubén Claros, Ramiro Francisco Claros y María Elizabeth Santizo. También le sobreviven sus trece nietos, a quienes cariñosamente se refería como sus Palomitas: Mónica, Franky, César Jr., Abraham, Luis, Andrea, Juan, Joanna, Rosalina, Jocelyn, Gabriella, César Ballardo y David, así como sus bisnietos Yulemi, Diego, Aleea, Cataleya, Alma, Che, Cain, Allison y Raquel. 

El viaje de Mami Sole a los EE. UU. allanó el camino para una familia extraordinaria, que incluía miembros de la Armada, la Fuerza Aérea, la Infantería de Marina, abogados, diseñadores gráficos, chefs, especialistas en tecnología de la información, especialistas en marketing, trabajadores calificados y muchos otros profesionales. Su legado sigue vivo a través de sus descendientes y continuaremos perseverando y trabajando duro en su honor, ya que gracias a sus sacrificios todos estamos aquí. Todos los que tuvimos el privilegio de conocerla la extrañaremos profundamente.

Soledad Dolores Claros Santizo, affectionately known to family and friends as Mami Sole, was born on July 18, 1940, and peacefully left us on August 20, 2023. She was a hard-working, strong-willed, headstrong, loving mother who dedicated her life to her family. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her.  

Soledad was born in Corinto, Morazan, El Salvador. She was the eldest of five children and took her role as the eldest seriously. Her youngest siblings, Rosalina and Omar, viewed her as a second mother who could be stern at times but always very protective of them. When Soledad was 15 she was sent to San Miguel to live with her maternal grandfather so that she could continue her education. Soledad was able to complete high school and continued her education in order to become a business secretary.  Due to her mother falling ill, Soledad made the decision to put her education on hold and began working to help her father take care of the family. Although she had to take a break from her education she never lost sight of her goal.  Education was very important to Soledad and she made sure to get back to school and earn her degree, an accomplishment that both she and her mother were very proud of. 

In 1968, Soledad made the difficult and courageous decision to leave the comfort of her home, family, friends, and everything she had ever known in order to move to the United States. A decision that forever changed the trajectory of her family. Although she did not speak the language and knew very few people, Soledad was able to quickly find work and took it upon herself to master the English language. Her exceptional work ethic enabled her to have a 20+ year career with Raleigh Haberdasher until it closed its doors in 1992. Soledad also found love and married Luis Alfredo on April 28, 1971. Despite the numerous hardships, Soledad remained focused. Through her hard work and dedication, Soledad was able to gain her US residency and Citizenship.  She was able to accomplish another major goal, to bring her parents and children to the US. Soledad also made it possible for several members of her family - siblings, nieces, nephews, and even friends - to move to the United States. 

It was common for siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews to gather at her house to enjoy family time. When Soledad was not working or with family she loved to cook, sew, craft, and garden but most of all she loved thrifting and a good yard sale. She was a regular at the Magruder Park flea market and had an eye for a great deal. While her life experiences created a tough outer shell, those who knew her and had the honor of spending time with her appreciated her witty personality, sarcasm, and funny sense of humor. 

Soledad is preceded in death by her parents Ramiro and Juana Lucia Claros. She is survived by her husband, Luis Alfredo Santizo, and her three children: Cesar Ruben Claros, Ramiro Francisco Claros, and Maria Elizabeth Santizo. She is also survived by her thirteen grandchildren, whom she lovingly referred to as her Palomitas: Monica, Franky, Cesar Jr., Abraham, Luis, Andrea, Juan, Joanna, Rosalina, Jocelyn, Gabriella, Cesar Ballardo, and David as well as her great-grandchildren Yulemi, Diego, Aleea, Cataleya, Alma, Che, Cain, Allison, and Raquel.  

Mami Sole’s journey to the US paved the way for a remarkable family, including members of the Navy, Air Force, Marines, lawyers, graphic designers, chefs, information technology specialists, marketers, skilled laborers, and many other professionals. Her legacy lives on through her descendants and we will continue to persevere and work hard in her honor, as it is because of her sacrifices we are all here. She will be deeply missed by all that had the privilege of knowing her.
