Shirley DaCosta, affectionately known as “Papa Bird,” passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, in Laurel, Maryland. He was born on September 25, 1944, in Christiana, Jamaica, to his parents, Charles and Icylin DaCosta. One of ten children, Shirley grew up surrounded by a large and loving family and spent most of his life in Christiana.
In June of 1969, Shirley married Barbara DaCosta. Though their marriage later ended, they remained close friends throughout the years. From their union came four children, whom he loved deeply: Everald DaCosta (wife Tamica), Garfield DaCosta, Walford DaCosta, and Natalie Morse (husband Shawn). He was also a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Shirley began his early career working for the Christiana local government before migrating to the United States in 1988. He later joined Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, where he dedicated over twenty years of service. Known for his reliability and warm spirit, he made lasting connections with many throughout his time there.
After retiring in 2010, Shirley returned home to Jamaica and fulfilled one of his greatest dreams, building a home of his own where he could enjoy the fruits of his labor. He cherished spending time outdoors, tending to his garden, and surrounding himself with family. His life was rooted in his faith, love, kindness, and a deep appreciation for togetherness.
Shirley is also survived by his siblings: Derek, Lloyd, Iris, Howard, Lena, Philip, Raymond, Stephen, and Audley. His family meant the world to him, and he spent his life centered around the people he loved most.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him - family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched. Shirley’s kindness, humor, and warm presence will remain in the hearts of many forever.
