TO My Dear Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren,

Here is a brief history and highlight of my career life in the Army and at the U.S. Senate.

I joined the Army in 1961. I decided to enlist instead of being drafted because I could choose to become a specialist. I became a Supply Specialist for weapons, ammunition and clothing. I finished basic training and Quartermaster School in 1962.

One of the special services jobs I had was setting up sports tournaments for those serving. They needed to have fun and relax as they continued to train, so I set up bowling and horse shoe tournaments and got an award for it. I moved up from E-1 to Sp5 E-6 Staff Sergeant in five years.

In 1962, I was sent by cruise ship to Hawaii for training before being sent to Vietnam to provide support, as a Supply Sergeant. I managed six staff personnel, for soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War from 1967 until 1968. I was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for the 11th Infantry Brigade and at the end of my tour of duty; I was awarded THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL.

After returning home I served as an Army representative on the Inaugural Committee and participated on behalf of the Armed Forces of the United States in the Inauguration of Richard Milhous Nixon as President of the United States.

I received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1971, enrolled in computer program training school and went to work for a NASA contractor managing the processing of space flight data. I left NASA and went to work at the U.S. Senate. There I set up the 1stMicro-graphics, Micro-film operations and received recognition by the director in 1978 for my work.

After retirement I used my equipment training to start a small business with Nancy selling, renting and repairing office equipment and selling office supplies.

I want to leave you with this thought: I have had a very unique career working my way up the ladder of success from serving in a war zone in the Army, processing space flight data at National Aeronautics and Space Administration and retiring from the U.S. Senate in 1996 at the age of 57. At each job position I showed management I was ready to learn all I could, doing more than I had to and as a result got promotions for my performance.

YOU CAN DO THE SAME WITH YOUR LIFE.
