Robert Hill

March 31, 1932 — June 3, 2007

ROBERT BENNETT HILL, "Bob"

(Age 75)

Of Stockton Lane, Hyattsville, MD, a loving father , grandfather and great-grandfather ,
passed away at his home Sunday, June 3, 2007 to be with the Lord. Born in Washington, DC, he never left the Maryland area and resided in his home in Parkway Estates for 51 years, never wanting to move. He had just celebrated his 75th birthday with his family. Bob's memory will be for ever cherished.

He had the ability to always make a stranger feelmwelcome that was most unique. Whether
tinkering with his cars or working on his houses, his greatest love was talking to his friends and family always giving his view on life. He was known for always taking the time to speak to anyone he met. If he was present, he would have everyone laughing. Always telling friends and neighbors how his daughters and grandchildren wanted him to move to Virginia Beach and he was going to stay on Stockton Lane in his house and not leave.

He was born on March 31, 1932 and grew up in Mt. Rainier, MD. He went to Redeemer Lutheran School and graduated fr om Mt. Rainier High School and was the captain of the football team in 1950. He always kept in touch with everyone in Mt. Rainier and Brentwood. He attended his high schools' 50th reunion and went to recent gatherings. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and PWP, Inc.

He started in Safeway Stores, the the milk truck deliver, was an insurance agent for Lutheran Brotherhood, then after retirement had a truck catering business.Which was his favorite.

His "passion" was driving and had to go on his "ride" to visit Mt. Rainier and his friends at McDonalds on Rt. 450 at Capital Plaza every day.

He was the son of the late Edwin W. Hill, Sr. and Edna M. Hill. Also preceded in death by his two brothers, Wilbur and Edwin W. Hill, Jr., formerly of Mt. Rainier. He leaves to cherish his memory for ever are his two daughters, Debra L. "Debbie" Cromwell and Donna L. Owens of Virginia Beach, VA; his three grandchildren, Barrie Lee Benton and his wife, Stacie, Dana Lynn Gregory and her husband, Jay and Virginia Lee "Ginny" Jennings and her husband, Eric of Virginia Beach; his three great-grandchildren, who he was so proud of, Bryan Lee Benton, 13 years old, Abigail Lynn "Abbey" Gregory , five years old and Emily Leigh Gregory, one year old; his nephew, Gary Lee Spear , whom he had a "special friendship" and his niece, Carol Ann (Spear) Moore and her husband, Ray .

He continued a wonderful friendship with his former wife and mother of his daughters,
Virginia L. (Spear) Tatroe and her husband, Lyle Tatroe. There wasn't a week that went by that they missed talking by phone keeping updated about their children, grandchildren and great-grandchild for 37 years, since they had been high school sweethearts in 1950.

His daughter Donna was able to come from VA Beach the last three years and spent a lot of timemwith him and drove him for "rides" whenever he wanted to go at any hour. The family has been thankful for "Aunt Donna". His loyal childhood friend for 60 years, John Shields came every morning to pick him up and run errands together.

He will be missed dearly by his friends, Carol Nevitt, Charlie Grubbs, Wayne, Steve Frankenfield, Nancy Rose Spahr, Ron and Helen Fones, Sue and Betty and Paul Savage, so many more and to his friends in the drive-in window at McDonalds who nicknamed him "Charlie Brown".

One of his special neighbors Janice Ruffin and her husband with her kind words and "sprecial visit" to the family on Monday upon their arrival.

Thanks also to next door neighbors and for Tony's kind words to Bob's grandson, Barrie Lee Monday evening. His daughters, Debra and Donna want to thank all of his friends who
laughed at his jokes and truly understood his outlook on life which was so important to him.

His familiar "Do you understand" and "Are you listening" will never be forgotten.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday , June 9, 1 p.m. at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, officiated by Reverend Malcolm Smith. Condolences may be offered online to the family at: www.gaschs.com. Please feel free to tell your fond memories and funny stories about "Bob Hill".
