Michael Christopher Oberg, a lifelong Washingtonian and devoted friend to many, passed away peacefully in La Plata, Maryland at the age of 82.
Born and raised in Washington, DC, Mike grew up on Quincy Street, NE before his family moved to Chillum, Maryland. He attended St. Francis de Sales Grade School and graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School. A man deeply connected to his roots, Mike had a remarkable memory for the people and places that shaped his life—often sharing stories that painted a vivid picture of a changing city and a full life well lived.
Mike was the kind of person who never met a stranger. Wherever he went, he seemed to know someone—or at least knew a friend of someone. He had an effortless gift for striking up conversation and a deep, genuine interest in others' lives and backgrounds. Whether chatting with a neighbor, reconnecting with an old friend, or someone new, Mike's warmth and curiosity left a lasting impression.
He was deeply traditional in the way he lived and connected with the world and a man of quiet devotion. He was a long-time member of the Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge, where he was actively involved for many years. He was also very proud of his Scandinavian heritage and enjoyed participating in events and gatherings hosted by the Scandinavian Society in his younger years.
Mike had many simple joys that brought him happiness throughout his life. He loved reading the newspaper and was known for clipping articles of interest—saving bits of history, humor, or community news that caught his eye. His appreciation for life’s small details mirrored his thoughtful nature and old soul. He also loved riding his bike and took it with him wherever he went.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Oberg and her husband, Scott Hoppe; his beloved sister, Ann Rabinowitz; and his niece Amy Huffman and nephew Andrew Rabinowitz—who were a constant source of pride and love in his life.
Mike’s kind heart, storytelling spirit, and lifelong loyalty to his family and friends will be remembered by all who knew him.
