Martin J. Manning, 96 March 26, 1911 - February 26, 2008

Martin J. Manning, of Hyattsville, Maryland, died at his home on February 26, 2008.

He was born in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA on March 26, 1911 to the late Josef and Katherine (Ernst) Manning. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Anna Marschang, in 1992 and by his brother, Fred W. Manning, in 2006.

Mr. Manning attended Bethlehem Business College prior to enlisting in the Army in 1942. He served as message center chief with the Army Ground Forces Headquarters at the US Army War College in Washington, DC (now Fort McNair) during World War II retiring with the rank of Technical Sergeant.

Mr. Manning graduated from The Catholic University of America with a degree in Library Science in 1950 and was hired by the Library of Congress where he worked before moving to the U. S. Supreme Court library in 1959. He was appointed Assistant Librarian of the Court in 1966 where he served until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of St. Jerome's Catholic Church and was an active choir member and lector.

Mr. Manning is survived by his nieces and nephews: Annette O'Donnell of Greensburg, PA, Kathleen Szautner of Bethlehem, PA, Eugene Manning of Hagerstown, MD, Eileen Quick of Bernardsville, NJ, Suzanne Sisk of East Fallowfield, PA, Fred Manning of Frederick, MD and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visitation will be on Monday, March 3, 2008 from 9:00 until 10:15 AM at Gasch's Funeral Home, 4739 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, MD followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jerome's Catholic Church at 11:00 AM. Interment Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bath, Pennsylvania.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Gasch's Funeral Home, P.A.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jerome's Catholic Church, 5205 43rd Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781.
