Joan Lockhart

April 12, 1950 — July 8, 2025

Hyattsville

Joan Louise (Callahan) Lockhart passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in her home in Hyattsville, MD. She will be remembered most as the devoted wife to her husband, Jimi, of 54 years and loving mother of their daughter, Becky. Joan and Jimi, nicknamed Moonbeam and Blackbeard in their younger years, started dating in July of 1968 and were married on May 1, 1971 at St. Jerome Catholic Church of Hyattsville. They remained faithful and loyal to one another through all of life's challenges and happy moments and spent every day together, never leaving each other’s sides. Before Becky was born, they travelled across the country with their van club where they visited many states including one of their favorite trips to California. The past few years of her life she found the most joy being a grandmother to Rocco, the son of Becky and LaRay Harris Sr. and experiencing the love of their older children: Miyazia, Lishon, Ryan and LaRay Jr.

She grew up in Lewisdale, MD and graduated from Northwestern High School then spent her whole life living in Hyattsville.  She began her career as a young woman working for the U.S. Navy and stopped working to dedicate her life to being a mom.  She loved being involved in Becky's school activities, especially at Hyattsville Elementary where she volunteered at many events, attended field trips, made costumes for school plays, painted a mural of the mascot on the school wall and befriended many parents and teachers.  Some of her fondest memories of Becky's childhood include their many trips to the Hyattsville library and attending the White House Easter Egg Roll.  She had a passion for gardening and flowers and spent many years as a professional florist.  She was a very talented and creative artist of beautiful watercolor paintings and stained glass art as well as a seamstress.  She loved all of her friends and neighbors deeply and was always excited to share in many of her loved ones' milestones and life celebrations.  She enjoyed volunteering for many years with her husband delivering meals to community members for Meals on Wheels of College Park.  She was an animal lover and had many beloved pets over the years including dogs: Patches, Buttons, Duchess, Millie and Foxy; and cats: Inky, Piglet, Lucy and Ethel.  She is preceded in death by her father, Arthur E. Callahan Jr.; mother, Helen (Green) Callahan; uncle, Paul Milton Callahan and brother, Jim Callahan.
