Ihor Hulawyj

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved uncle on June 27, 2026, following an eleven-month long illness.

Ihor was the youngest of three sons born to Józef and Antonina Hulawy. He was predeceased by his parents and his beloved brothers, Włodzimierz (Nina) and Julian (Stefania). He is lovingly remembered by his nieces, Halina, Lidia (Bert), and Lucyna and by their children Maya, Michał, Daniel and Damian, as well as by many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his enduring friendship.

For more than thirty years, Ihor enjoyed a distinguished career as a broadcaster with the Ukrainian Branch of the Voice of America. Through his work, he became a trusted voice for listeners around the world, promoting Ukrainian history, culture, and current affairs with integrity, knowledge, and deep pride in his heritage.

A lifelong student of history and culture, Ihor possessed an insatiable curiosity and a remarkable gift for sharing it with others. He was an avid collector of coins and stamps and found great joy in introducing family and friends to the treasures of the Smithsonian museums and the many historic landmarks throughout Washington, DC, Virgina, Maryland, and beyond. Whether exploring a museum, a battlefield, or a hidden historical site, he delighted in bringing history to life through his stories and knowledge.

Travel was among Ihor’s greatest passions. He cherished every opportunity to visit Poland, Ukraine, and Canada, where he spent precious time with family and lifelong friends. He delighted in exploring museums, castles, churches, and historical landmarks, discovering regional traditions and cuisines, and creating lasting memories. His visits to Canada and Poland were especially dear to him, not only because they reunited him with family, but because he eagerly looked forward to the homemade meals lovingly prepared by his nieces – dishes that brought back cherished memories of his childhood and his homeland.

Those who knew Ihor will remember his unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and Ukrainian heritage. He possessed a rare ability to make every conversation meaningful. Every visit left a lasting impression on everyone, fortunate enough to know him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated medical professionals at Regency Care Center and to the compassionate caregivers of Beltway Home Care, whose exceptional care, kindness, and support brought comfort throughout Ihor’s illness. We offer our heartfelt and profound gratitude to Father Robert Hitchens and Father Mykola Dziurakh for their compassionate spiritual care and unwavering support during the last year. We also offer our deepest appreciation to Ann and Stephen Kerda and Bohdanna Urbanovych and Jaroslav Dutkewych for their unwavering friendship, compassion, and generosity during this difficult journey. Your love and support meant more than words can express.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Gasch’s Funeral Home, 4739 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, Maryland. Parastas will be celebrated at 3:00 PM. The Funeral Service celebrating Ihor’s life will be held on Thursday July 16, 2026, at 9:30 AM at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family, 4250 Harewood Road, NE, Washington, DC. Interment will follow at 1:00 PM at Cedar Hill Cemetery Mausoleum, 4111 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hillcrest Heights, Maryland.

Ihor’s legacy lives on in countless lives he touched through his work, his love of history and culture, his devotion to Ukraine, and the treasured memories he created with family and friends. He will be dearly missed, forever remembered, and always held in our hearts.
