Arno Loran St. Denis

Arno Loran St. Denis, born February 6, 1952, in Munich, Germany, passed away on August 5, 2026. He was the son of Albert Joseph St. Denis and Eleanor King St. Denis.

Arno’s early years were spent in Germany and France, where his father worked as an educator for the US Army. In 1966 the family returned to the United States aboard the SS United States, arriving in New York City before settling in Hyattsville, Maryland. There his father began a career in civilian service with the United States government.

From a young age Arno demonstrated a deep fascination and understanding of mechanics. He began by modifying bicycles, progressed to motorcycles, and soon turned his attention to “hopping up” automobiles, always seeking ways to extract more speed and power. That passion led him to Routt’s Cycle Center, where he worked under Sonny Routt, a motorcycle drag racer and machinist. Under Routt’s guidance Arno began building and drag-racing motorcycles. One of his many notable racing career highlights was in 1977 when he became the drag-racing world champion in the Pro Competition class, campaigning the world’s quickest and fastest Triumph Twin, fueled by nitromethane.

After leaving Routt’s, Arno established his own machine shop Arno’s Custom Machine and Welding. He earned a reputation as one of the finest machinists in the specialized field of high-performance engine repair and the fabrication of scarce or unavailable parts. His business later focused on the antique motorcycle market, where he reconditioned, restored and created components that keep classic machines running.

Arno formed relationships that lasted a lifetime and he will be remembered with deep respect by fellow racers, machinists, and antique-motorcycle enthusiasts who valued his skill and generosity. He will be sorely missed for his expertise, his craftsmanship, and the steady friendships he nurtured throughout his life.

Arno is survived by his siblings: Judith Owen, Anthony (Kate) St. Denis, and John (Martha) St. Denis, and leaves behind a wide circle of friends.
