Dear Friends and Family,

I regret having to send this invite via Facebook, but I’ve just spent the past hour trying to plug in emails accurately and its just taking too long and I’m overwhelmed. Thank you for understanding. I know some of you aren’t able to attend because you live overseas, but I still wanted to include you in this very sentimental special communications I’m sending out on behalf of my father’s soul who will be very happy to see you on March 2 at his funeral.

My “tough as nails” tata Atza’s (nick name for Alex) death was not of old age but of having too much energy after 98 years on earth which resulted on numerous times in sudden accidents due to his need to always be independent of cains, walkers, and an alarm necklace. The last fall was particularly hard for him to recover from because he had blood thinners in his system of which stunted the healing that needed to take place after the last careless accident that caused a cerebral hemrage. My dad was very energetic to the end -- both cognitively and physically. I often wondered if he was a descendant of the Hunza people (known to give birth past their 80s and live to be over 120 years old) who are located in Northern Pakistan of which are believed to be decedents of Alexander the Great ;) (often my father made jokes about his name and being connected). My father could have lived to be 105 as some of you truly know by having spent time with him. I’ve been very delayed in sending out this invite because I’m having to do everything on my own. But, I want to do it on my own because it feels good inside my heart to do this last gesture of love for my dad. I’m trying to make everything as I think he’d want it. My father was born in Cacak, Serbia on Dec. 3, 1921. He was baptized Serbian Orthodox and thus had me baptized the same. Therefore, I decided to do his funeral at the St. Luke’s Serbian Orthodox Church located at 10660 River Road, Potomac, MD. 20854. Serbian (Christian ones) funerals are a bit different than American ones. For example, the viewing will include a visitation/viewing, then a small ceremony (Pomen) and then a main service (Opelo) that will be an hour long. There is no precise time-line for any of those except that we’d like people to arrive at 11a.m. to start with the first part. In general, I think each part is 30-60mm long. After, my girlfriends and I are hosting a pot luck in the church hall. I’d like to thank Mark Rasevic the church coordinator for funding that! Hvala Mark. We are asking that each guest bring something to share during the potluck. Beverages and food of all kinds are welcome. Slivovitz? Rakia? Got some? Sure, go ahead and bring it! My girlfriends Caroline, Aya, and Carolyn will be running the potluck so you’ll be able to find them once you arrive at the church to give them your dish.

Donations for flowers are very welcome and will be accepted by Gasch’s Funeral Home. Please go to this link to find out how to get your floral gift sent to Gasch’s who in return will be in charge of managing the flowers at the many parts of the funeral (during the week until 4p.m., you can directly call and contact “Clint” at Gasch’s if you are confused about how to donate at (301) 927-6100:

Please let me know if you will be attending and how many people you will be bringing with you as soon as you can.

The burial will be at Rock Creek Cemetary. My father’s body will be buried in a section where the deceased have a heritage from a culture that is dominated by the Christian Orthodox religion (i.e. Russian, Serbian). This burial will be private. If you truly have a great interest in attending, please let me know and I can share with you the date and time, but otherwise, it will just be myself and a very small group. This will be the most difficult part for me so I’d prefer it to be extremely small.
