Alan Richwald passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, September 19, 2022.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Christina Richwald, and their grateful children, Arthur (Amy) Richwald, Wendy (Eric) Pavlat, Sr. MaryAnn Richwald, and Sr. Rejoice Mary Hoedoafia, as well as thirteen grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
Alan proudly served his nation in the U.S. Army as an Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Specialist for 63 years. Among other honors, he was awarded the Legion of Merit (1975) and the Samuel Sharpe Award (2010), and in 2018, he was inducted into the Army Ordnance Hall of Fame. He also won several patents relating to EOD, especially in the field of landmine disposal. His motto was, “So Others May Live.”
Alan had a true servant’s heart and a passion for helping and caring for others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends and family may call at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 4902 Berwyn Rd, College Park, MD 20740 Wednesday September 21, 2022 from 10:00 am until the Mass at 11:00 AM. The interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date which will be announced on this site. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church 4902 Berwyn Rd, College Park, MD 20740 in Alan’s name.
