Born in Little Sutton, Cheshire England. Passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014, formerly of Washington, D.C. Beloved wife of the late John Gilbert Carter. Loving mother of Humphrey Carter, Anne Bowdoin, Sarah Carter, and the late Nicholas Carter. Mother-in-law of Elizabeth Carter, Mark Deshong, and the late Harry Bowdoin. Grandmother of Christopher Carter, Sarah McPhie, Alice Bowdoin, and Julia Godtfredsen. Great-grandmother of Caitlin, Jack, and Nicholas Carter, Viive and H. Bowdoin Godtfredsen, and Euan and Greer McPhie. She graduated from Cambridge University, received a master's degree from the University of Maryland, worked as a librarian at the Brookings Institute, and was a researcher for the Oxford English Dictionary. With her lifelong passion for language and words, and her love of literature and her family, she was an inspiration to all who knew her. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made in her name to the National Cathedral, 3101 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20016.
